Device Technologies, Inc. - Reel-to-Reel Dielectric Coating: For three decades, Device Technologies has been polymer coating linear (reel-to-reel) substrates for its own Spring-Fast® wire protection grommet edging as well as other strip materials.
Our polymer coating method is a unique, reel-to-reel process. It applies thermoplastic resins such as nylon and polyethylene, or thermoset resins such as polyester and epoxy to linear metallic substrates such as wire, cable, stampings, or steel strip. The coating can be applied to fully encapsulate, or selectively coat part of the surface creating functional and/or decorative finishes.
Process Description
With reeled substrate provided by you by local sources to minimize freight, we mount the product on our linear polymer coating line. The product is de-reeled and proceeds through our proprietary polymer coating and curing zonesto optomize polymer fusing process. The product is then is re-reeled and returned to you.
Functional finishes include end products that require durable surface protection for electrical insulation or corrosion resistance. For example, polymer coating is used to provide electrical insulation on magnet wire used in large transformers. A corrosion resistance example is strip steel that is coated with a nylon powder to prevent corrosion in a salt air environment.
Decorative polymer coating finishes are also durable and can be used to create virtually any color as well as special effects.
What can Linear Polymer Coating Do for You?
Device Technologies' linear polymer materials have the versatility to meet the demands of a broad range of applications. By utilizing our polymer coating technology, you may be able to reduce additional parts such as insulators or other dielectrics, as alternatives to Mylar, Kapton and other similar materials while simplifying designs, assembly and thereby lowering installed costs.
Call us or send us an email about your project. We will need to know:
  • the size, material and shape of your substrate (wire, cable strip, etc.)
  • the amount to be coated
  • expected coating thickness and characteristics

Southco Wins Design News Golden Mousetrap Best Product Award: On September 10, Design News announced Southco as a Golden Mousetrap Best Product Award winner for its ST-12C Counterbalanced Hinge in the category “Fastening, Joining & Assembly Components.”
Design News recognized the ST-12C as the only standard position control hinge to offer counterbalance capabilities. The counterbalance design requires less effort to move heavier objects as compared to friction-only hinges. As a result, it's easier for equipment operators to lift and position hinged components.
For more than two decades, the Design News Awards Program has recognized engineering innovation and creativity in product design. This year, Golden Mousetrap awards were given in four major categories: Electronics, Motion Control/Automation, Hardware/Software, Materials/Fastening/Joining/Assembly, and 20 subcategories. After receiving a record number of entries, Design News selected 71 finalists and 23 winners.
Design News selected another Southco product, the R4-EM Electronic Rotary Latch, as a finalist in the category “Components, Hardware & Interconnect.”
Southco President and CEO Brian McNeill states, “The Southco team is thrilled to be recognized for its products in such a competitive arena.”
Editor-in-Chief Karen Field adds, "Design News congratulates the winners and finalists of the 2009 Golden Mousetrap Awards for the great work they've done to develop new and innovative products for design engineers. These products showcase the highly imaginative ways that today's engineers are ‘building a better mousetrap,’ and we thank them for their contributions."

    Remote Monitoring Solutions:

Part 3 of a 3-part series on Electronic Access Solutions

It might be a simple indicator light or a sophisticated monitoring system. Whatever the choice, a remote monitoring solution is the final piece to a full Electronic Access Solution (EAS).

So how does it work? Let’s take Southco’s H3-EM Electronic Locking Swinghandle as an example. In this scenario, the Swinghandle provides electronic access security to datacenter cabinets. Its integrated sensors and multiple output signals provide data for both local and remote monitoring.  The swinghandle can be integrated with industry standard rack monitoring solutions with a simple retrofit, and the microprocessor-controlled gear motor design ensures minimal power consumption and multi-event status reporting.

The possibilities with today’s remote monitoring solutions are endless. You can provide an electronic “signature” each time a lock is actuated. Combined with a unique input credential, the system can provide the necessary output to networked systems to control and monitor access from any remote location. You can use an EAS with an existing networked control system that is down the hall or across the globe. And we can help.

If you'd like to get started on an electronic access solution integration, be sure to check out our new EAS Guide. It will walk you through the basic components you will need for your system. Once you know what you want, contact our dedicated design team with your design requirements so we can help get your project rolling!

U.S. Manufacturing Grows for Seventh Month in a Row - March 1, 2010: By Agence France-Presse.
The rebounding manufacturing sector grew for seventh consecutive month in February, but at a slower clip than expected, according to The Institute for Supply Management (ISM).
The ISM said its manufacturing index, also known as the purchasing managers' index, slowed to 56.5% in February, from 58.4% in January.

Any number above 50% indicates growth. The figure was slightly lower than the 58% expected by most market watchers.

New manufacturing orders slipped 6.4 percentage points compared with January.

"The severe winter weather along the East Coast and Toyota's production shutdowns undoubtedly had a negative impact on manufacturing production in February. According to the ISM report, the adverse events last month were offset by on-going improvement in economic activity and the inventory swing that occurs when firms have to slow their destocking, and eventually build stocks, due to continuing growth in orders," said Daniel J. Meckstroth, Chief Economist for the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI.

"Relatively small fluctuations in the indexes are normal for the indicator since there is a clearly discernable growth trend in the data," he added.

For the third consecutive month there was an improvement in the employment outlook, it was up 2.8 percentage points for the month to 56.1%.

"Manufacturing is not known as being a sector that generates many jobs quickly in a recovery. The employment indicator may be signaling that job cuts were overdone broadly and the labor market will shortly starting improving," said Meckstroth.
ISM concurred on labor market improvement. "Manufacturers are seemingly willing to hire where they have orders to support higher employment," ISM said

Activant Trading Partner Connect Helps Above Board Electronics Transmit Error-Free Communications: While technology has generally improved communication, there are still moments when confusion arises, and for Above Board Electronics (ABE), a distributor of electronic fasteners and components, a single miscommunication is one too many.

"The number of line items per transaction can be very high, so accurately transferring information to several different hands is a big challenge," explains Dantes Rosete, ABE's IT manager. "When a customer orders a part, it goes to a salesperson, then to a customer-service representative to be entered, and then to the supplier, so each point is a critical area where an error can be crippling."

Needing an answer that would eliminate miscommunication and data-entry errors, Rosete and the team at ABE turned to Trading Partner Connect, Activant's Internet trading network for distributors and manufacturers. "The nomenclature for our parts is much more complicated than UPC codes, so having Trading Partner Connect as a means of standardizing communication is indispensable," Rosete says.
